Every company is looking for a way to decrease turnover, because high turnover results in a lot of wasted time and money. When employees leave the company, money needs to be spent in order to hire a new person and train them for the position. The problem is that many companies are looking at internal ways to decrease turnover, without considering the root of the problem: hiring the right employees in the first place.

Why Hiring Affects Retention

When you hire the right employee for the job, it is more likely that they will stay with the company for a longer period of time. A good fit means that the employee with be satisfied with their work, they will be happy with their day-to-day schedule, and they will enjoy the work environment.

So, if you want to decrease turnover, then you need to take a close look at the hiring processes. Refining the hiring system means you will have better success in locating the right candidate for the job, and in turn you will be able to hire a new employee who will be satisfied working with the company for awhile.

How to Improve the Hiring Process

If you want to improve your hiring process, then you need to look at several factors:

First, it is important to make sure that the job description matches the position. Too often, companies use a vague job description because they don’t take the time to put together a detailed description. The vague description may attract candidates who aren’t the right fit for the position, because they don’t realize the type of job that they are applying for.

Next, take the time to closely analyze each candidate. Instead of quickly brushing through the resumes and having a few short interviews, it is better to spend a little time getting to know the candidate, in order to determine if they are a good fit for the company. You might consider using a personality test, background checks, or other tools that will help you to understand the dynamics of how well the person will be able to complete the job.

If your company doesn’t have the time or system in place to fully research potential employees, then you might consider hiring a consultant who can help with the recruiting process. They will have the experience to understand the different hiring techniques that should be used in various industries, in order to help you find the perfect fit for the job you are looking to fill.
