During the interview, don’t be scared to ask probing questions in order to gain more insight about the person. After they answer a question, you can follow up with additional questions to go deeper into their answer. Even a simply “Why?” or “Why did you make that decision?” can help to bring out answers that weren’t rehearsed or practiced for the interview.

Check Their References

Asking for references is an essential part of the interviewing process, and you should call those references if you are seriously considering the candidate. If you are in a hurry, it might be tempting to simply hire someone without calling their references. But, a quick phone call can be very enlightening, and help you to see the type of person that you will be hiring.

Do an Internet Search

Google is a great tool for hiring managers and recruiters, because there is a lot of information that can be discovered with a quick search online. Go to Google and do a search for their name, and also search on social media websites such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. These sites can provide great insights about the person, and you can discover information that never would have been uncovered during an interview. An online search will give you a good idea about their personality, and these searches can also help you to identify any inaccuracies that might have been listed on their resume or in their application.

Talk With Your Coworkers

Two minds are always better than one, and it is a good idea to collaborate with other team members before you make your decision. Have at least one other person sit in during the interview, and they can help to point out details that you might have missed on your own.

Trust Your Gut Instinct

Even though there is no “data” to backup your gut instinct, there is something to be said about following a hunch.
